MISSION OBJECTIVE
- The Senior Legal Advisor, LAC contributes to Equality Now’s mission to achieve gender equality and end discrimination and violence against women and girls. Guided by the organization’s values of integrity, inclusivity, tenacity, and perseverance, this role advances legal reform and access to justice throughout the LAC region by applying expert legal analysis, advocacy, and strategic litigation.
- Success in this role is demonstrated through high-quality, timely legal outputs; measurable contributions to regional and international legal reform; strengthened partnerships with legal actors; and recognition of Equality Now’s leadership in human rights forums.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following is a general outline of duties and responsibilities for this role. It is not an exhaustive list, and additional duties may be assigned or removed at the discretion of the Regional Representative, LAC to meet organizational needs and priorities
- Purpose: Analyze with Insight
- Identifies legal and policy frameworks, models, and strategies that inform Equality Now’s program and advocacy development within the LAC region.
- Analyzes existing legal systems, policies, and mechanisms to generate insights and legal strategies that enhance the relevance, value, and measurable impact of Equality Now’s regional and global programs.
- Conduct rigorous legal and policy analysis of international, regional, and national frameworks addressing sexual and gender-based violence and discrimination.
- Monitor and interpret developments in the Inter-American Human Rights System, identifying opportunities for strategic engagement.
- Lead and oversee preparation of strategic litigation, amicus briefs, petitions, and complaints before national and regional bodies, ensuring quality, timeliness, and compliance with human rights standards.
- Develop comparative legal research and advocacy tools that strengthen Equality Now’s positioning and drive systemic reform.
- Apply integrity, analytical rigor, and perseverance to produce work that is consistently cited, referenced, or adopted by partners or judicial mechanisms as a marker of success.
- Engagement: Collaborate
- Provides expert legal guidance and feedback to the LAC team, global leads, and partners to strengthen program quality and foster a culture of collaboration and mutual learning.
- Builds and maintains relationships with legal institutions, human rights bodies, and partner organizations to advance collective advocacy goals. Demonstrates empathy, inclusivity, and professionalism to promote sustained collaboration.
- Strengthen partnerships and coalitions across the region, ensuring Equality Now is recognized as a trusted, credible legal actor.
- Provide technical guidance to local partners in monitoring and evaluating proceedings related to LAC campaigns, aiming for visible improvement in adherence to human rights standards.
- Design and deliver legal training and workshops, resulting in increased partner capacity and diverse judicial actors for the adoption of legal best practices.
- Collaborate with communications and development teams to integrate legal analysis into campaigns, ensuring alignment and measurable advocacy reach.
- Represent Equality Now in regional and global forums with diplomacy and integrity, ensuring consistent, positive feedback from external stakeholders.
- Delivery: Manage the Project Cycle
- Strategize, plan, and lead legal and advocacy projects, ensuring deliverables meet established timelines, budgets, and strategic outcomes.
- Ensures legal work products, reports, and submissions uphold Equality Now’s quality standards and demonstrate measurable progress toward campaign objectives.
- Manage and oversee strategic litigation and advocacy projects through all phases—design, research, implementation, and evaluation—with timely completion and documented results.
- Supervise and mentor associate collaborators, legal fellows, and legal advisors, cultivating balanced workloads, high morale, and professional growth.
- Ensure project documentation and reporting demonstrate clear learning, adaptation, and accountability.
- Maintain strong coordination with communications, MERL, and development teams to ensure consistent reporting of legal impact.
- Model resilience, adaptability, and accountability, reflected in high-quality deliverables and positive team feedback.
- POSITION REQUIREMENTS & TARGET SKILLS PROFILE
- Substantive Knowledge
- Strong knowledge of the Inter-American Human Rights System and United Nations System, as well as national legal frameworks and good practices addressing gender-based violence and legal discrimination.
- Proven experience drafting legal documents, conducting comparative analysis, and providing clear technical legal advice that informs laws, policy, or litigation outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to translate analysis into tangible legal reform and recognized contributions to strategic cases or legislation.
- Communication Skills
- Strong verbal and written communication in Spanish and English (required); Portuguese proficiency preferred.
- Adept at fostering cross-cultural collaboration and cultivating trust-based relationships consistent with the mission and values of Equality Now.
- Excellent legal research, analytical, and writing skills; capable of presenting complex legal issues clearly and persuasively.
- Skilled in stakeholder engagement with policymakers, human rights bodies, and media, fostering respectful, inclusive, and impactful dialogue.
- Communicates with clarity, empathy, and cultural sensitivity to ensure Equality Now’s voice is recognized and trusted.
- Excellent legal writing and editing skills, able to produce persuasive and precise submissions, reports, and advocacy tools.
- Strong oral advocacy and presentation skills, with experience conveying legal arguments to diverse audiences including policymakers, UN bodies, donors, and the media.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external partners, maintaining strong relationships with civil society coalitions and legal experts.

- Strong project management, including planning, executing, and tracking complex legal projects across multiple jurisdictions, with a focus on results and quality assurance.

- Applies participatory and rights-based methodologies to legal and advocacy work.
- Demonstrates resilience and adaptability under pressure, ensuring consistent achievement of objectives and continuous professional growth.
- Ability to coordinate multi-stakeholder legal initiatives, including pro bono partners, law school clinics, consultants, and regional teams.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with attention to detail, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality outputs.
- Capacity to document and systematize legal work for organizational learning and donor accountability.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing advocacy priorities and international legal developments.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally and domestically, sometimes on short notice, to support regional teams, engage with partners, and represent Equality Now.
- Targeted Specialized Knowledge
- Law degree (LL.B/J.D.) specializing in International Human Rights Law; additional specialization in Criminal, Technology, Family, or Gender and Justice Law preferred.
- Advanced degree (LL.M, Master’s or equivalent certification) strongly preferred.
- 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in international human rights, legal advocacy, or women’s rights law, including demonstrated experience practicing law in Argentina and direct familiarity with Argentine legal systems, courts, and regulatory frameworks.
- Strong academic background in law, international human rights, gender studies, or a closely related discipline - or equivalent professional experience.
- Knowledge of legal frameworks on child marriage, female genital mutilation, and technology-facilitated gender-based violence is an asset.
- Recognized for producing high-quality, innovative legal work.
COMPENSATION
- At Equality Now, our compensation philosophy reflects our commitment to advancing the human rights of all women and girls through lasting legal and systemic change. We approach pay holistically, recognizing base salary as one component of a broader total rewards package designed to support well-being, growth, and long-term engagement.
- Base Salary Range: $25,539 - $46,772 USD
- The final offer within this range will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, relevant experience, demonstrated skills, and qualifications.
